Recently I received and email from a person who visited my site. The questions was very profound in as much as the focus of y site is concerned. The reader asked:
Have you noticed that the word Santeria has the effects of a false passwords that quickly closes all doors when it is uttered? According to the proven Pharisee manner, Santeria and the works associated with Santeria are readily delegated to that area of human experience sealed off by unshakable prejudices. This then spares us – at least apparently – the conflict with all the phenomena readily associated with Santeria: black magic, Satanism, black masses; everything vile, wicked, indecent, scandalous, repulsive; evil personified.
During a reading session with a Babalawo, certain messengers called Odu manifest themselves over the Opon Ifa. These messengers almost always refer to life’s circumstances; it is the conditioning of circumstances that offers resistance to the irresistible energies of the Orisas. The influence of the Odus can be compared to the force of evolution, which we must make adjustments or modifications in our personal desires and behaviors so that we can function within the master plan.
Survival often depends on successfully making necessary concessions to conditions over which there is no control within the environment, which consists of everything and everone. There have been so many times when I’ve been asked this question. Perhaps the best answer was given by Samuel Butler so instead of paraphrasing his work I humbly present his essay on the matter:
I often get asked to speak on the question how to make the best of life, but I may as well confess at once that I know nothing about it. I cannot think that I have made the best of my own life, nor is it likely that I shall make much better of what may or may not remain of it. I do not even know how to make the best of the time I have to write this article, and as for life as a whole, who ever yet made the best of such a colossal opportunity by conscious effort and deliberation? In little things no doubt deliberate and conscious effort will help us, but we are speaking of large issues, and such kingdoms of heaven as the making the best of these come not by observation.
The question, therefore, on which I have undertaken to address you is, as you must all know, fatuous, if it be faced seriously. Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on. One cannot make the best of such impossibilities, and the question is doubly fatuous until we are told which of our two lives—the conscious or the unconscious—is held by the asker to be the truer life. The world over, Yoruba beadwork—necklaces, staffs, and crowns—are rightfully worn by orishas, kings, and priests.
Orisha priests wear necklaces not only for “protection” and identity as children of orishas. As well, we wear necklaces to announce that our heads are consecrated. Priests are representative of the orishas in the ile aye.
How is it possible that becoming aware of something one can attain enlighten? How is it possible to become free from the unconscious by just being “aware”?
This questions is significant, and this question is likely to have occurred to you, so many things have to be understood. First, it is thought that spirituality is a difficult attainment. It is neither: that is it is neither difficult nor an attainment. Whatsoever you are, you are already spiritual. Nothing new is to be discarded from your being; you are as perfect as possible. It is not that you are going to be perfect sometime in the future, it is not that you have to do something arduous to be yourself. It is not a journey to some other point somewhere else; you are not going somewhere else. You are already there. That which is to be attained is already attained. This idea must go deep, only then will you be able to understand why such simple techniques can help.
If spirituality is some attainment, then of course it is going to be difficult – not only difficult, but really impossible. If you are not already spiritual, you cannot be, you never can be, because how can one who is not spiritual be spiritual? If you are not divine already then there is no possibility, there is no way. And no matter what effort you will make, effort made by one who is not already divine cannot create divinity. If you are not divine, your effort cannot create divinity. Then it is impossible.
